ABOUT US
Girls Rock! DC is a collective of women from the DC Metro Area and was founded in the fall of 2007. Following in the footsteps of girls rock camps across the United States, GR!DC is currently creating and planning the area's first all-girls rock camp in August 2008. GR!DC will be a week-long day camp open to 40 DC area girls, ages 8-18. During the week, we will offer small group instruction on electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, turntables, and vocals. Campers will form bands, collaborate to write an original song and then perform in a GR!DC Showcase at DC’s 9:30 Club. We will also offer workshops on such topics as gender and cultural identity, band merchandise and promotion, conflict resolution, and other skills young women need to take over (the world of rock)!
The GR!DC Collective includes teachers, musicians, artists, and community organizers. Together we bring diverse approaches to grassroots organizing in Washington, DC and beyond. GR!DC builds upon the experiences of our organizers including musical backgrounds, connections to local youth, and social and political organizing. The organizers, volunteers and supporters of the camp will be comprised of local, relevant role models so that the campers see strong women from their own city and communities. These women are so often underrepresented in both mainstream music and the images of our daily lives. Choosing local role models helps create a sustainable and supportive community of peers and mentors in the DC area that will last far beyond the week of camp.
