WASHINGTON , D.C. — Girls Rock! DC, a local non-profit aimed at establishing a supportive and creative space for girls, trans, and gender non-binary youth age 8-18 years to develop their self-confidence through musical instruction and performance, is hosting their tenth annual Girls Rock! Camp – rock camp this June 26th-30th, 2017. The camp will be held at E. L. Haynes Public Charter School in northwest DC.

Camper and volunteer applications are streaming in for the 10th annual Girls Rock! DC camp. We anticipate around 60 youth and more volunteers to come together to create safe and creative space to RISE UP, and ROCK OUT.

Over the course of the week, skilled volunteers provide campers with instruction on electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, vocals (singing and MCing/rapping), and DJing. Campers form bands and DJ crews and collaborate to write an original song or DJ set with the support of an experienced band or DJ coach.

Campers also attend workshops on songwriting, stage presence and performance, and social justice and activism. In April, we launched the first-ever Girls Rock! DC Youth Leadership Program. For the past two months, four of our teen campers–Annabelle, Julliette, Logan and Neenah–have given up their Saturdays to meet, discuss, and tell us what they want to see during our 10th Anniversary summer camp. They reviewed workshop proposals, revamped program offerings, and will facilitate their own workshop on media criticism and body image at camp next week. They even chose our 2017 camp theme: Changing Goodness to Greatness. Girls Rock! DC’s 10th Anniversary summer camp is their creation.

The week-long camp experience will culminate with the Camper Showcase held at the 9:30 club July 1 at 11 AM. Campers bands and crews will show off their new skills by performing their song or set for a live audience at one of the East Coast’s best music venues. The Camper Showcase is open to the public and ticketing information is available soon on the 9:30 Club website. No musical experience is necessary to participate as a camper and We Rock! Camp welcomes campers with an interest in all musical genres.

Girls Rock has been my favorite experience of my entire existence and is something I don’t plan to ever let go of.”

– Neenah W., age 17, GR!DC Youth Leader and 2017 camper

Youth leadership is empowering because Girls Rock is for girls [and trans and gender nonconforming youth] and is now run by girls [and trans and gender nonconforming youth],” says 17-year-old Annabelle W, Youth Leader and 2017 camper.

Girls Rock! DC Camp is an explicitly feminist, anti-racist, anti-homophobic, inclusive space. Girls Rock! DC strongly encourages people of color, people who are queer, gender non-binary and/or trans, and any folks who come from traditionally oppressed experiences to apply to be campers and volunteer.

We invite the media to attend Girls Rock! DC Camp Thursday, June 29 during the week and the Camper Showcase on Saturday, July 1.
